Couchsachraga Peak for my wife Leesa's ADK 46er Finish! - 9/20/14

My wife Leesa chose today to try and finish her ADK 46 high peaks.  She had one left.... Couchsachraga, a straggler that didn't get climbed previously when we did Panther and Santanoni on a winter hike.  She had saved Couch because she feels it gets a bad wrap.

We got an early start and were on the trail as it was getting light at 6:30.  We had expected to see a partly sunny day with wind and temperatures in the high 50's.  We got 2 out of 3.   The sun never did show.  We were shrouded in fog from a low cloud all day.  Visibility was perhaps a quarter mile at best.

This was Leesa's trip and we did things her way.  She wanted to hike to Bradley Pond and take the herd path up to Times Square.  We followed the jeep road from the trailhead to the turnoff at approximately 1.75 miles.  This was an easy 35 minutes.  Next we followed the blue trail and came to the Santanoni Express herd path at 3.5 miles and 1.5 hours.  At Bradley Pond, and the turnoff for the herd path to Times Square, we ran into a group of about 8 young people.  I guessed that they were perhaps from a college outing club.  We ended up seeing them 3 other times during the day.

We crossed on the beaver dam by Bradley Pond and began our climb to Times Square.  About 1.5 hours later we stood at the square.  We were still shrouded in fog, so Leesa chose to skip Panther and head straight for Couch.  We could always grab Panther later in visibility improved.

The trail to Couch was a bit sloppy, and of course the Couchie swamp still exists.  We managed to to get ourselves across intact.  Leesa led the way as we went up over a false summit and on to the true summit.  She threw up her hands and then grabbed our dog Rev and gave her a hug while I snapped pictures.  While the 46 had not been a goal that she was feverishly working on, she did come around to making the decision to finish.  She looked mighty happy on the summit.

We ducked off the summit for a snack before continuing on.  As we headed back towards Times Square, we came across a 2 men and woman hiking to Couch.  The woman said she was going to finish her 46 on Panther after she tagged Couch.  We wished her well and headed back uphill.

the normal view to Whiteface was missing on this day

Eventually, we made it back to Times Square and it decision time on where to go next.  There was still no visibility so Leesa elected to head towards Santanoni and then down the Santanoni Express herd path.

The wind was blowing pretty good as we reached Santanoni.  Fog was blowing through and the clouds kept us from having any views.  It was still neat to be there.  We had a quick lunch and headed down the express.  It was now about 2 o'clock.  We went slow down the express.  It was muddy and slick and Leesa was getting tired.  Just before we made it back to the blue trail, we passed a group of 4 who had gone up the express to Sanatanoni and were now on their way back down the same way.

It was nice to have the smooth walk out on the jeep road at the end.  We got back to the car at about 6 PM ready to head for Schroon Lake and a hot dinner.  Leesa is a 46er, and I'm proud of her accomplishment.  She's been a trooper.  Almost half her 46 were done in the winter; sometimes in temperatures as cold as -16 degrees!  She has no intention of finishing a winter 46 though.

Panther and Couchsachraga Peaks - 2/10/13

I was hoping to climb all 3 peaks in the Santanoni Range on Sunday (Santanoni, Panther and Couchsachraga), but I had my doubts, since the trail from the snowstorm of Friday might still be untracked.  I knew several other groups were headed that way, so I hoped we could take turns breaking trail.

Leesa, Rev and I pulled into the parking lot at about 7:15 right as two other cars pulled in.  It turned out to be "MooseBeware" and "The Tandem" of the ADK High Peaks forum.  Both were hoping to climb all 3 as well.  MooseBeware headed off on her skis for the first portion of the trek.  We were a couple minutes behind, and "The Tandem" were gearing up when we headed out.  It was -16 degrees when we started out, but it was supposed to warm quickly into the low twenties.

I'm not going that way!

This is becoming quite the famous sign

Two cars were in the lot when we got there, and they looked like they had been there overnight. The trail was broken all the way up to Herald Square. Leesa and I arrived there at about 11:45, then went over to Panther. A few braids were sorted out and we were on the summit before noon.

Back at Herald Square, Leesa had decided to head back. I told her I planned to do Couchsachraga and then I'd decide if I wanted to continue on to Santanoni or not. Rev wanted to stay with me. At the point, MooseBeware popped into Herald Square after losing a little confidence in finding the herd path to Couch.

Leesa headed down and MooseBeware, Rev and I went to tackle Couch. It was about 12:15. Rev knew exactly where to go, and I followed her, breaking trail since she didn't do such a good job. MooseBeware followed us and we made pretty good progress, getting to Couch at about 1:45.

Rev on the summit of Couchsachraga, just before she went on her own little adventure

This is where things turned interesting. Rev and I ate a quick lunch on Couch, then MooseBeware was anxious to head out. We started back and got to the Couchie swamp when Rev decided to follow her nose off trail. I told MooseBeware to continue ahead while I went in search of Rev. Having no luck, I very regretfully started back. Rev has done this to me 4 or 5 times before. She is a hound and you can't change her.

I started back up to Times Square dragging Rev's coat and my hat to give her a scent to follow. About 1/2 way back to Times Square I ran into the couple "The Tandem" from the forum. They were heading in to Couch and they had their headlamps ready, knowing they would be getting out after dark. They said that if they saw Rev, they would try to get her out with them.

I continued on, and caught up to MooseBeware at Herald Square. It was now 3:15. She decided Couch was enough for today and I wasn't going to do Santa, since I was hoping Rev would catch up to me. MooseBeware and I descended together to Bradley Pond (it was less than an hour going down). She stopped for a minute at the Beaver Pond and I continued on.

I got back to the car at 5:30. Still no Rev. Leesa was very upset, of course, as was I. The Couchie swamp is no place to lose a dog. After a few minutes MooseBeware came out on her skis. She packed up and headed out.

Leesa and I decided we would wait at the parking lot awhile and see if Rev would come trotting out, or if The Tandem would come out with Rev. We turned the car with the headlights facing towards the trail and waited....

Wouldn't you know it, at 6:30, Rev came trotting out on her own!   She had been lost from me since 2 and she had come from the Couchie Swamp back to the trailhead, following my tracks and scent. During the last hour, she was moving in the dark.

To say the least, we were both overjoyed. We gave her her dinner and she was asleep for the ride home.

I'll still have to go back to get Santanoni, but the mountain will always be there. I got my Rev Back.

Our hero...

MooseBeware - Nice hiking with you. Sorry the whole dog event put a damper on the day.  Hope to hike with you again with no dog drama.

The Tandem - Thanks for your willingness to try and get Rev back. Hope to see you on the trail in the future.
