Fishbrook Pond - 11/12/11

Fishbrook Pond, just east of Lake George, is a sizeable pond with 2 leantos located by the water's edge (one at the south end and one at the north end).  I had not been there before, so Leesa, Nick and I went to take a look on Saturday.
Our route was made easier since the 1.5 mile jeep road from Hogtown to Dacy Clearing was open.  We parked at Dacy Clearing and hiked to Sleeping Beauty Mountain, then past Bumps Pond to Fishbrook Pond.

Trip Stats:
Trailhead Elevation:  1350'
Sleeping Beauty Viewpoint Elevation:  2206'
Highest Elevation:  2272'
Hike Distance:  8.33 miles
Hike Time:  5 hours
Total Vertical:  2260'

A nice location with a fireplace at the south end of Fishbrook Pond
This would be a great place to camp if the leantos are full, or you want to be away from them.

Looking north to the leanto at that end of the pond
Both leantos were on good condition, and both had picnic tables!  What a luxury.

The southern leanto
Both leantos were in nice locations.   The southern leanto had a nice setting in the pines.  The northern one was in the grass with full day sun on a point.

Southern leanto again

After spending some time at Fishbrook Pond, we took the loop trail around Erebus Mountain and back to Dacy Clearing.

On the way back to Dacy Clearing
We started our hike at 10 AM and were done at 3 PM.   The day was nice with temps in the 40's and low 50's.

Sleeping Beauty Mountain has a spectacular view and Fishbrook Pond makes a nice camping destination.  We found it to be a nice half day loop walk.

  1. Stumbled across your trip report which motivated us to try it this morning. Hiking northwest from the Fishbrook north leanto we encountered a swampy section which was overgrown with thorny bushes and very aggressive mosquitoes. After 1/4 mile we headed back. Will try again late fall or early spring.

    1. Sorry to hear that. It is pretty buggy everywhere right now... mosquitos, black flies and deer flies. I've been mostly in the high peaks lately, so the black flies have been the worst. Fall is definately the best time to be in the woods.

  2. We stumbled on to your site yesterday morning and were encouraged about our quest to make it to Fishbrook Pond this year. It's been on our list for a couple of summers now. It was a gorgeous day. Saw the Leantos just like in your pictures. Didn't make it to the west side of Bumps pond to see the fireplace remains. Since we started our hike later in the day, we didn'tmake it to Sleeping Beauty but will save it for next time. We were fortunate that there weren't as many bugs our way like the person in July ran into. Bug spray and dryer sheets really do keep the bugs away.
