Shelving Rock Mountain (Revisited) - 1/8/12

No big hikes this weekend.  Yesterday was a work day at Gore Mountain Ski Area in North Creek, NY for their 1st ski race of  the season, and today my two youngest wanted to go for a hike, but not an all day hike.
I brought them to Shelving Rock, since neither of them had seen it before.  Shelving Rock is located on the eastern shore of Lake George, NY.The round trip hike is only 2.2 miles, (although the trail head sign says 1.7 miles each), but the views are spectacular.  The summit offers fine views, but the ledge just below the summit offers even better views.

Ice on most of the rocks, but no snow

Nick and Lindsay on the summit

Just perfect views of Lake George from the ledge below the summit

A nice place for a picnic

After we hiked the mountain, we also took the short walk to see the Shelving Rock Falls which are almost across the street from the Shelving Rock Mountain Trail Head.

Win a Copy of "The Will to Climb" from New England Outside

Do you like to read about adventure when you are not out there yourself?   I do, and this book sounds like a fascinating read, so I'm trying to win a copy of it.  To find out more about the book, and New England Outside, go to Grant's blog.  You can get to his contest information from here.

Ed Viesturs has accomplished a lot by setting goals for himself and following through.
While my goals aren't as lofty as his, my 2012 challenge has been posted, and I'll see it through.  In short, I've got to travel 1250 miles, by self propelled means with a minimum of 200,000 vertical feet in the process.

Thanks Grant for the contest!  Good luck to anyone that chooses to enter.
