Street and Nye Mountains - High Peaks Wilderness - 9/4/13

This hike was planned around my dog Rev.  She is closing in on finishing her climb of all 46 Adirondack high peaks.  Five were left and climbing Street and Nye would reduce that number to three.

I planned to use a vacation day on Wednesday to enjoy some nice weather.  In preparing for the hike, I learned that ADK High Peaks Forum member Shephenesherman was also planning on hiking S & N on Wednesday, so we decided to join forces.

He was driving up from southern New York state so we agreed to meet at 10:20 AM at the High Peaks Information Center near the Adirondack Loj.

I arrived an hour early so I nosed around and took a few pictures, the first being the one of the view from the beginning of the Adirondac Loj Road.

Then I went down the Souh Meadow Road to the end to check out the new foot bridge over South Meadow/Klondike Brook.  The previous bridge got washed out by Hurricane Irene.

After that, I went to the HPIC to meet Stephen and his dog Halle.  He arrived right on time and we did introductions and the dogs checked each other out.  Rev was OK, but she wanted to be the lead dog.  Halle had no problem with that, so that is how the day went.  Rev lead the whole time and Halle brought up the rear.
We made quick progress getting to Indian Pass Brook.  The rock hopping wasn't bad, but a couple of the rocks were wet so caution was used and we safely made it across without getting wet.  We saw a junior ranger sitting at the edge of the brook.  I think he was making sure people got across OK and knew where they were heading.  He thanked us for having our dogs on leashes.
We made our way up to the Street/Nye split and Stephen chose to head for Street first, so that is what we did.  There was some blowdown at times up on the ridge making the leash a little difficult... the dogs went under and we'd have to pass the leash under the log, then climb over.
We arrived at the summit of Street and stopped for 30 minutes or so to have lunch and look at the views of the Macintyre Range and the Santanoni Range.

The trip over to Nye was quick and we stopped again to look around.  The disc was once again about 1o feet up on a tree.  High peak # 43 for Rev!

We took is slow on the way down and marveled at how dark the sky was getting.  At 4 PM it felt like sunset.  By the time we were re-crossing Indian Pass Brook, it was beginning to rain lightly.  A real surprise, but that is high peaks weather.

It was still raining lightly as we returned to the parking area.  Still, it was a nice day.  Thanks Stephen for the company!  He was staying at a leanto at the loj to begin a 3 day backpacking trip  and hoping to climb Colden, Gray, Skylight, Cliff and Redfield.  Hopefully all went well.
