Cheney Mountain, Moriah, NY - 1/17/15

Leesa and I are not ones to pass up a trail without hiking it.  The Cheney Mountain trail in the Town of Moriah is a relatively new trail that just appeared on the latest version of the National Geographic High Peaks map.  We were in the area on Saturday so we stopped by to check it out.

This trail is part of the Champlain Area trail network.  They have their own trail markers and they even offer a patch!

The first four pictures below show the trail signage.

This mill was visible from one of the 3 overlooks on the mountain

The trail starts be crossing a large field then it ducks into the woods to climb the mountain.  This climb is only about 500' which makes is ideal for families with younger children.  The hike is only 1 mile to the top.

The mountains of Vermont can be seen in the distance

Cheney Mountain is visible right from the start

We were surprised to find out that the summit offered 3 different overlook points.

We visited the #7 mine overlook first, followed by the Champlain Bridge overlook, then the North Lake overlook.

The Lake Champlain Bridge looks so small from here!

This hike isn't a killer, and it feels small to Leesa and I.  We're used to much longer and grander hikes.  Still, this is a nice way to spend an hour and we're sure the locals like having a place to hike. We've now highlighted this trail on our map as having been climbed.

Hike Stats:
Hike Distance:  2 miles
Hike Time:  1 hour
Total Vertical Gain: ~500'
